Zimbabwe’s new dinosaur discovery: inside the find

Image
" Many of our discoveries are still under study, but the team has just announced its   first new dinosaur , dubbed   Musankwa sanyatiensis . At first sight, it’s unremarkable – just a few bones from a single hind leg. It was found with the thigh, shin and ankle bones still connected, but weathering out on the shore of Spurwing Island. However, once it was cleaned and back in the laboratory at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, close comparisons with other Late Triassic (235-199 million years ago) dinosaurs from Africa and elsewhere revealed that it had several unique features that marked it out as a previously unknown species. Those features included the shapes and sizes of the areas where the muscles would have attached to the bones." Can Daily Dietary Choices Have a Cardioprotective Effect? Food Compounds in the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiometabolic Diseases

Image
Abstract "Cardiovascular diseases accompanying metabolic syndrome comprise one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The medical community undertakes attempts to improve treatment options and minimize cardiovascular diseases’ numerous consequences and exacerbations. In parallel with pharmacotherapies provided by physicians, nutritionists are developing strategies for diet therapy and prevention based on lifestyle changes, with high success rates. Consumption of specified food compounds included in various products with proven protective properties can be helpful in this regard. Due to the wide possibilities of diet in metabolic health promotion, it seems necessary to systematize information about the metabolically protective and cardioprotective properties of fiber, probiotic bacteria, plant sterols, folic acid, vitamins B12, C, and E, PUFAs, lycopene, polyphenols, arginine, CoQ10, and allicin. The aim of this review was to present the food compounds with potential use in ca...

Yoga and meditation-induced altered states of consciousness are common in the general population, study says

Image
" He added that "ancient meditation manuals from the wisdom traditions may be useful for classifying and understanding altered states of consciousness. They may provide guidance into how to better manage altered states when they may be difficult. We clearly need more research to further study and understand this possibility." "Clinical curriculum on altered states of  consciousness  should be developed to better support clinicians caring for patients experiencing suffering linked to these kinds of experiences," Sacchet added. "Also, those who teach meditation practices should ensure that participants are aware of potential risk," he said. "Together, these kinds of safeguards will help to ensure that these very promising and powerful practices are taught and experienced safely."" A Case for Regularly Obtaining Nutrition History Food for Thought

Image
" This case demonstrates the potential effect of dietary changes on cholesterol levels. Typically, patients with primary severe hypercholesterolemia, defined as an LDL cholesterol level of 190 mg/dL or higher, are at increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and are given guideline-directed statin therapy due to their elevated risk for future coronary events. 1   A careful dietary history can be valuable in identifying patients who might benefit from dietary changes rather than a statin prescription. This patient was consuming a diet high in saturated fats, including red meats, eggs, and coconut oil. 2   A behavioral modification approach was appropriate because she had multiple areas for improvement in her diet and no history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or hypertension. However, this conservative approach may not be appropriate for patients with cardiovascular risk factors and/or genetic hypercholesterolemia. This nutritional approach is especial...

The brain might also have a microbiome – what you need to know

Image
" The human brain microbiome was found to be a subset (about 20%) of the gut microbiome. Although more bacteria were found in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s, the researchers were not able to find a pattern of certain bacteria that were only found in diseased brains. However, this study has yet to be peer-reviewed and published in a scientific journal, so the results should be treated with some caution." Yoga Can Help Heart Failure Patients Stay Strong

Image
" “Patients who did yoga had healthier hearts and were more able to carry out ordinary activities such as walking and climbing stairs than those who only took medications,” Singh said. However, he warned that patients with heart failure should speak to their doctor before starting yoga and then receive training from an experienced instructor. They also should keep taking any prescribed medications unless their doctor says otherwise. “Yoga may be unsuitable for heart failure patients with severe symptoms, who were excluded from our study,” Singh said." A life-threatening cup of tea: A Case Report and a Literature Review

Image
Abstrac " Herbal teas have been ingrained in traditional practices, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine, for many years. Despite their global popularity and widespread use, there is a notable absence of comprehensive studies elucidating the mechanism of action and potential adverse effects associated with these medicinal herbs. We present the case of a male in his early 50s who consumed an herbal tea called “Tapee tea” which is marketed to alleviate musculoskeletal pain and is available for purchase on various online platforms. He presented to the hospital due to melanotic stools and was subsequently diagnosed with a large duodenal peptic ulcer which was further complicated by hemorrhagic shock and cardiopulmonary arrest. Our aim is to create awareness for the public to exercise caution before purchasing products regarded as “natural” supplements. Healthcare professionals, including physicians and mid-level providers, should adopt a comprehensive approach to patient asse...

Impact of hibiscus tea consumption on clinical and biological parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes and/or hypertension | ECE2024 | 26th European Congress of Endocrinology | Endocrine Abstracts

Image
"Introduction: Medicinal plants and their benefits on human health in the treatment of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, overweight or obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia present a current issue of several research studies. Among these plants is ’Hibiscus sabdariffa’, known for its hypotensive, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and anti-obesity actions. Our work aimed to assess the impact of Hibiscus tea consumption on clinical (systolic and diastolic blood pressures, weight) and biological parameters (blood glucose level, cholesterol level, and triglycerides level) in patients with type 2 diabetes and/or hypertension." Scientists made a six-legged mouse embryo — here’s why

Image
" Researchers have long known that, in most four-limbed animals, both the external genitalia (penis or clitoris) and hind limbs develop from the same primordial structures. When Mallo’s team looked further into the six-legged mouse phenomenon, they found that Tgfbr1 directs these structures to become either genitalia or limbs by altering the way that DNA folds in the structure’s cells. Deactivating the protein changed the activity of other genes, resulting in extra limbs and no true external genitalia." Nasal rinsing: why flushing the nasal passages with tap water to tackle hay fever could be fatal

Image
" Nasal rinsing or irrigation is an increasingly popular technique to manage hay fever and other irritants in the nose. It involves pouring or squirting a solution into the nose to help wash out microbes, mucus and other debris such as dust or allergens. There are specialised containers called neti pots that are used to pour water into one nostril, allowing it to run out of the other by tilting your head to the side. Water bottles and other specialised sprays pre-filled with saline solution can also be used. But the practice is not without its risks, not least because if not done with sterile water it can introduce germs into the body. A small number of people, especially those with weakened immune systems, have even died from diseases caught through nasal rinsing. So how can allergy sufferers reap the benefits of nasal rinsing while avoiding the pitfalls?" Therapeutic potential of lipid-lowering probiotics on the atherosclerosis development

Image
Abstract "Hypercholesterolemia is a critical risk factor for atherosclerosis, mostly attributed to lifestyle behavior such as diet. Recent advances have emphasized the critical effects of gastrointestinal bacteria in the pathology of hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis, suggesting that the gastrointestinal microbiome can therefore provide efficient therapeutic targets for preventing and treating atherosclerosis. Thus, interventions, such as probiotic therapy, aimed at altering the bacterial composition introduce a promising therapeutic procedure. In the current review, we will provide an overview of anti-atherogenic probiotics contributing to lipid-lowering, inhibiting atherosclerotic inflammation, and suppressing bacterial atherogenic metabolites." DNA says you’re related to a Viking, a medieval German Jew or a 1700s enslaved African? What a genetic match really means

Image
" Who are the medieval people whose DNA you inherited? Each fragment of your DNA descends from a random line up your family tree – father’s mother’s mother’s father and so on – at each generation in the past, selecting at random one of two parents. The more lines in your family tree that reach a certain medieval person, the more likely you are to inherit DNA from that person." Brazilian single-dose dengue vaccine could help turn tide in the fight against fever

Image
" With just one injection, it provides good protection in a very elastic age range, from two to 60 incomplete years, according to the published results. It also has the differential of being able to be applied to those who have or have not already been infected by the dengue   virus . Protection was observed in all age groups, with 90% in adults aged 18 to 59, 77.8% in those aged seven to 17 and 80.1% in children aged two to six. The analysis of the effectiveness of the immunogen was carried out over two years with just under 17,000 volunteers in 16 research centers. The study is in its final phase and will complete in June 2024. The next step will be to finalize the dossier with all the study information to apply for registration at Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) by the second half of 2024." The mystery of consciousness shows there may be a limit to what science alone can achieve

Image
" For example, suppose we discover scientifically that a certain form of brain activity is correlated with the conscious experience of an organism. The physicalist will interpret this as the form of organisation which turns non-conscious physical processes – such as electrical signals between brain cells – into conscious experience, whereas the panpsychist will interpret it as the form of organisation which unifies individual conscious particles into one larger conscious system. Thus we find two very different philosophical interpretations of the same scientific data."
