Did dust from the Chicxulub asteroid impact kill the dinosaurs?

Image
"Dust might have been responsible for the deadly dinosaur-killing global winter that came after an asteroid slammed into Earth 66 million years ago, finds a study published on 30 October in  Nature Geoscience 1 . A team of geoscientists led by Cem Berk Senel at the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Brussels reinvestigated the aftermath of the impact that formed Mexico’s Chicxulub crater — a collision that wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs and much of life on Earth." Mammal cells use some viruses like vitamins, study hints

Image
"  On the menu tonight, a nice, nutritional, bacteria-killing   virus . Sounds unappealing? It may not be to your cells. In a new study, scientists revealed that a type of bacteriophage — a virus that infects and kills bacteria — found in the human gut helps mammal cells grow and thrive in what could be a symbiotic relationship. That's a surprise, as other bacteriophages (phages for short) are known to  trigger inflammatory responses  when they encounter mammalian cells." A layered lake is a little like Earth’s early oceans − and lets researchers explore how oxygen built up in our atmosphere billions of years ago

Image
"  My colleagues and I have homed in on Deming Lake to explore questions about how microbial life adapted to and changed the environmental conditions on early Earth. Our planet was inhabited  only by microbes  for most of its history. The atmosphere and the oceans’ depths didn’t have much oxygen, but they did have a lot of iron, just like Deming Lake does. By investigating what Deming Lake’s microbes are doing, we can better understand how billions of years ago they helped to transform the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans into what they’re like now." Good news for coffee fans: A cup of joe seems to benefit kidney health

Image
" Each cup of coffee is linked to a reduction in   kidney damage , up to a maximum of four cups. Two cups yield more   health benefits   than one, while three cups offer even more advantages. This increased benefit stops after four cups. It is worth noting that the above applies to black coffee without sugar or any other unhealthy additives. Should we all start drinking black coffee to keep our kidneys fit? The two nutrition scientists say it is too early for official recommendations. Firstly, because the study focused solely on coffee drinkers and their  kidney  health. "The study does not provide hard evidence," Geleijnse says." Managing benign prostatic hypertrophy with pumpkin seeds

Image
"  When you think of pumpkin seeds, you likely remember carving jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween and having to scoop out that messy mass of seeds. It turns out that those seeds can act as a potent medicine. Specifically,  Cucurbita pepo , a member of the gourd family, has some significant medicinal uses. Although there are many different varieties of pumpkin, the two most studied are the  C. pepo  and  C. maxima . "

Scientists found a way for two black holes to orbit each other forever without colliding

Image
" Astronomers have long assumed that two black holes that circle close to each other are always destined to become one in a cataclysmic merger that spans eons. That needn't always be the case, new research finds. In a new study, physicists found that it is theoretically possible for two black holes to remain at a fixed distance from each other, thanks to their mutual gravitational pull being perfectly counterbalanced by the speed at which the universe is expanding." A Reverse History of the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria: From the Underwater Remains to the First Structure

Image
"The Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coastline of Egypt existed for 1600 years, through three major political systems, and was rebuilt and repaired many times. Yet despite the complexity of its history, there seems to be a need in the popular imagination for a unique image of the building. Commonly, such reconstructions are based on descriptions of the Islamic Pharos, slightly modified and set in a 4 th -century BCE context. Here, I want to show how the Pharos may have changed with the centuries, and the easiest way to do this is to start with what remains today and go back in time toward the original structure." Researchers discover new therapy for treatment-resistant prostate cancer

Image
"Some forms of prostate cancer are more challenging to treat and may not respond to conventional treatments. Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer is a type of advanced prostate cancer that no longer responds to normal treatments and has spread to other parts of the body. Researchers from the Institute of Cancer Research, London, have discovered this resistance may be reversed in some people by stopping white blood cells from being “hijacked” and pulled into tumors."
