" The presence of SARS-CoV-2 marks the principal difference from the pre-pandemic era, since it is augmenting the burden on an already weakened health-care system. The challenge is amplified by the extremely high transmission capacity of SARS-CoV-2 compared with influenza and RSV, which makes seasonal management much more complex.

Until the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the respiratory virus season had a fairly predictable beginning and end that was determined by virus surveillance over the years. Our systems were already struggling to absorb this seasonal increase in patients. But today, the picture has become even more complex with the continuing presence of SARS-CoV-2. And our hospitals, with no time to catch their breath, are struggling to keep up."

  Abstract "Humans have a long history of transporting and trading plants, contributing to the evolution of domesticated plants.  Theobroma cacao  originated in the Neotropics from South America. However, little is known about its domestication and use in these regions. In this study, ceramic residues from a large sample of pre-Columbian cultures from South and Central America were analyzed using archaeogenomic and biochemical approaches. Here we show, for the first time, the widespread use of cacao in South America out of its native Amazonian area of origin, extending back 5000 years, likely supported by cultural interactions between the Amazon and the Pacific coast.
